About The Funky Bowler
The creations at the Funky Bowler are made by Dinah D and Trevor Gear on Gabriola Island in the heart of the Salish Sea. Their felting is inspired by their careers in music and circus arts.
The Funky Bowler Studio is situated on a tiny farm affectionately known as the Fun Farm where they are constantly creating both in the studio and on the land.
The Process of Making Hats
Everything at the Funky Bowler is handmade. Through experimentation we custom build hat blocks to create fun, colourful, and unique hats.
Wool is the chief ingredient to a good hat and a Funky Bowler could be made out of any breed of wool—some of our favourites are Merino, Corriedale, and Icelandic.
Every step is done by hand, from fibre to felt to shaping and finishing. The felt is composed of up to 10 layers of wool fibres with various design elements. The hat is then shaped on a custom made wooden hat block and trimmed with the best quality grosgrain ribbon and finished with a sewn in sweatband.
